Job Description/Specification:

Westin Hotels & Resorts, part of Marriott International, offers an opportunity for candidates interested in hotel security, guest safety and loss prevention. The role focuses on protecting hotel guests, employees and company property while maintaining a safe and welcoming hospitality environment.

The Loss Prevention Officer is responsible for monitoring security systems, conducting property patrols, controlling access to keys and responding to incidents and emergencies. The position also involves preparing security reports, assisting guests and employees, enforcing company procedures and supporting the hotel’s overall safety standards.

This role may suit candidates who want to begin or develop a career in hotel security, as the supplied job description does not require previous related work experience.

Key Responsibilities

1. Key Control and Security Monitoring

The Loss Prevention Officer will conduct key control audits and monitor electronic key storage systems. Responsibilities include issuing and receiving master keys, radios and beepers while ensuring these items remain secure and properly accounted for.

The officer will also monitor closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems and alarms, patrol hotel areas and assist guests who require help accessing their rooms.

2. Emergency Response and Incident Management

Responding appropriately to emergencies is a major part of the position. The officer may need to assist guests and employees during accidents or other urgent situations, contact emergency medical services (EMS), or administer first aid and CPR when required.

Other duties include responding to vehicle accidents and thefts, addressing safety hazards, defusing disturbances and requesting outside assistance when necessary. The officer must use the appropriate communication codes when calling for support.

3. Incident Reporting and Confidentiality

Accurate documentation is essential in hotel loss prevention. The officer will complete incident reports covering security-related events and prepare shift summaries or daily activity reports.

Additional responsibilities include typing, proofreading and copying security documents, providing appropriate paperwork for employees requiring outside medical treatment and ensuring confidential reports are shared only with authorized individuals.

4. Guest Service and Property Protection

Although the role focuses on security, professional guest service remains important. The officer is expected to welcome guests, respond to their needs, assist individuals with disabilities and help maintain a positive hotel experience.

Responsibilities also include escorting unwelcome persons from the property when appropriate, protecting company assets and reporting accidents, thefts and other incidents to the relevant personnel.

5. Teamwork and Operational Standards

The position requires following company policies, maintaining professional appearance and uniform standards, and reporting injuries or unsafe working conditions to management.

The officer may also assist supervisors with employee training and motivation, help assign work tasks, monitor completion deadlines and contribute to quality assurance expectations. Clear communication and positive working relationships with colleagues are important for effective security operations.

Preferred Qualifications

According to the supplied job description, the preferred qualifications are:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Related work experience: No previous related experience required.

  • Supervisory experience: No previous supervisory experience required.

  • License or certification: None specified.

Candidates should be comfortable using computers to enter and retrieve work-related information, communicating professionally and preparing written reports. Some locations may have additional security licensing or registration requirements.

Physical Requirements

The position involves active work throughout the property and may require standing, sitting or walking for extended periods. Officers must be able to move quickly when responding to incidents, navigate stairs and uneven surfaces, and inspect equipment and written information.

The job description also specifies lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 75 pounds with assistance. Reaching, bending, twisting and working in confined or elevated spaces may also be required.
