Job Description/Specification:

A well-established regulated and Sharia-compliant investment institution in Doha, Qatar is seeking an accomplished Investment Director / Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to build and lead its investment function. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the successful candidate will play a key role in designing the investment platform, developing new products, establishing governance frameworks and building a high-performing investment team.

This is an executive/C-suite leadership opportunity for an experienced investment professional with strong expertise across investment management, private equity, real estate, structured products, corporate finance and portfolio management. The successful candidate will lead the investment lifecycle from origination and structuring through execution, portfolio management and exit.

About This Role

The Investment Director / CIO will architect and enhance the investment department, including its strategy, operating model, team structure, governance, processes and product pipeline. The role will also oversee the orderly management and realisation of an existing legacy investment portfolio while focusing primarily on the institution's future investment agenda.

The successful candidate will work closely with the CEO, Investment Committee, Board, regulators, investors, fund managers, advisors and other financial stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead the institution’s overall investment strategy and asset allocation framework in line with business objectives, risk appetite and Sharia-compliant principles.
  • Build and enhance the investment department, including its operating model, mandates, governance framework and team structure.
  • Design and launch new investment products and funds, from concept and structuring through documentation, regulatory approval and market launch.
  • Establish and strengthen investment policies, SOPs, Investment Committee processes and risk controls.
  • Recruit, mentor and lead a high-performing investment team while establishing clear performance standards.
  • Lead the complete investment lifecycle, including origination, screening, valuation, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, execution, portfolio management and exit.
  • Evaluate and structure opportunities across private equity, real estate, structured products and strategic investments.
  • Oversee investment products, funds, capital-raising instruments and associated offering and governance documentation.
  • Direct post-investment and portfolio management activities, monitoring performance, liquidity, risk and value creation.
  • Manage the existing legacy/vintage portfolio and ensure orderly realisation of investments.
  • Prepare and negotiate MOUs, LOIs, term sheets and pre-contractual documentation within approved mandates.
  • Prepare investment proposals, business cases and portfolio reviews for the Investment Committee, senior management and Board.
  • Ensure compliance with investment policies, regulatory requirements and applicable local and international laws.
  • Manage relationships with fund managers, co-investors, advisors, auditors, counterparties and other external stakeholders.
  • Represent the investment function with confidence and credibility before regulators, supervisory authorities and senior governance bodies.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration or a related discipline.
  • CFA, MBA or relevant professional qualification is highly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in structuring investment products and funds.
  • Significant post-investment and portfolio management experience.
  • Strong M&A and corporate finance advisory experience, preferably gained within a regional investment bank or Big Four advisory environment.
  • Previous experience in regulated financial institutions with strong knowledge of financial-services regulations and supervisory requirements.
  • GCC/regional investment experience is highly valued.
