Job Description/Specification:
A leading global engineering, energy technology, and industrial solutions organization is seeking an experienced Infrared Thermography Engineer to join its Electrical Diagnostic Services team in Qatar. This is an outstanding opportunity for professionals specializing in infrared thermography, electrical condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and thermal diagnostics of medium- and high-voltage electrical assets.
As an Infrared Thermography Engineer, you will conduct thermal inspections of substations, transformers, switchgear, GIS, and other critical electrical equipment to identify potential failures before they occur. Your expertise in thermal analysis and condition assessment will support asset reliability, operational safety, and preventive maintenance strategies across utility and industrial facilities.
About This Role
The Infrared Thermography Engineer is responsible for planning and executing thermal imaging inspections, analyzing thermal anomalies, assessing equipment health, and preparing comprehensive diagnostic reports with corrective recommendations. Working closely with project managers, maintenance teams, and client representatives, you will contribute to predictive maintenance programs and improve the reliability of critical electrical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
🌡️ Infrared Thermography Inspections
- Perform infrared thermography inspections on medium- and high-voltage electrical assets.
- Inspect substations, Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS), switchgear, transformers, busbars, electrical panels, power cables, joints, and terminations.
- Capture high-quality thermal images using professional infrared cameras.
- Monitor equipment operating conditions during inspections.
- Conduct routine and project-based thermal surveys in accordance with approved procedures.
⚡ Electrical Condition Assessment
- Identify hotspots, overheating, loose connections, overloads, phase imbalance, insulation deterioration, and other thermal abnormalities.
- Analyze temperature differences to determine equipment condition and operational risk.
- Evaluate thermal anomalies using severity classification and risk assessment methodologies.
- Compare current inspection results with historical records to identify performance trends.
- Support root cause investigations and equipment reliability improvement initiatives.
📊 Thermal Analysis & Diagnostic Reporting
- Interpret thermographic images and diagnostic data accurately.
- Apply emissivity corrections, reflected temperature compensation, distance factors, and environmental adjustments during analysis.
- Prepare detailed thermography reports with annotated thermal images, findings, and engineering recommendations.
- Present technical findings to project teams and client representatives.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and diagnostic documentation.
🔧 Predictive Maintenance & Reliability
- Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs for electrical assets.
- Verify corrective actions through follow-up inspections.
- Assist maintenance teams in prioritizing repair activities based on thermal condition assessments.
- Contribute to asset reliability and lifecycle management initiatives.
- Recommend maintenance strategies to reduce equipment failures and unplanned downtime.
🤝 Project Coordination & Client Support
- Coordinate inspection schedules with project managers and maintenance teams.
- Participate in technical meetings and client discussions.
- Provide technical guidance on thermography findings and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support project delivery.
- Ensure timely completion of assigned diagnostic activities.
🛡️ Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Comply with Permit-to-Work (PTW), electrical safety procedures, and site regulations.
- Ensure all inspections comply with applicable NFPA, ISO, IEC, and recognized thermography standards.
- Maintain calibration records for thermal imaging equipment.
- Promote safe working practices when operating around energized electrical systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in inspection quality and reliability.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Experience
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in Infrared Thermography of electrical assets.
- Proven experience inspecting medium-voltage and high-voltage electrical systems.
- Experience working within substations, power plants, industrial facilities, utilities, or EPC projects.
- Hands-on experience using professional thermal imaging systems such as FLIR, Fluke, or equivalent.
Certifications
- Infrared Thermography Level I Certification (Mandatory).
- Infrared Thermography Level II Certification (Strongly Preferred).
- Additional certifications in Electrical Safety, High Voltage Testing, Predictive Maintenance, or Condition Monitoring are advantageous.
Preferred Skills
- Strong understanding of electrical systems and thermal behavior.
- Ability to interpret temperature differentials and thermal patterns accurately.
- Knowledge of emissivity, reflected temperature, environmental influences, and thermal correction techniques.
- Strong technical report writing and analytical skills.

- Ability to work safely around energized high-voltage equipment.
- Good written and spoken English communication skills.
- Valid Qatar or GCC driving licence is an advantage.
