Job Description/Specification:
A leading global engineering and power technology organization is seeking an experienced GIS Substation Technician to join its high-voltage operations team in Qatar. This is an excellent opportunity for skilled electrical technicians with hands-on experience in Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance to work on critical transmission and substation projects.
As a GIS Substation Technician, you will support the installation, assembly, inspection, testing, commissioning, and preventive maintenance of GIS equipment and associated high-voltage systems. Working alongside engineers and project teams, you will help ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical substations while maintaining compliance with international quality and safety standards.
About This Role
The GIS Substation Technician is responsible for executing field activities related to Gas-Insulated Switchgear systems, including SF₆ gas handling, mechanical assembly, electrical testing, fault diagnosis, and equipment maintenance. The role requires strong technical knowledge of high-voltage substations, electrical drawings, testing equipment, and industry safety procedures.
Key Responsibilities
⚡ GIS Installation & Commissioning
- Install, assemble, and commission Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment.
- Support erection and commissioning of GIS bays and associated substation systems.
- Perform mechanical assembly and alignment of GIS components.
- Assist engineers during system energization and commissioning activities.
- Verify installation quality in accordance with project specifications and manufacturer requirements.
🔧 Maintenance & Inspection
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on GIS equipment.
- Inspect GIS enclosures, conductors, flanges, seals, and operating mechanisms.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify wear, damage, gas leakage, or equipment abnormalities.
- Support outage, shutdown, and emergency maintenance activities.
- Maintain equipment reliability through scheduled maintenance programs.
💨 SF₆ Gas Handling
- Carry out SF₆ gas filling, recovery, evacuation, and leak detection activities.
- Monitor gas pressure and ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.
- Operate SF₆ gas-handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain records of gas handling and equipment servicing.
- Follow approved procedures for safe handling and storage of SF₆ gas.
🧪 Electrical Testing & Diagnostics
- Support insulation resistance, contact resistance, and high-voltage testing.
- Perform mechanical and operational tests on circuit breakers, disconnectors, and earthing switches.
- Assist engineers during Partial Discharge (PD), timing, and diagnostic testing.
- Record test results and report equipment performance.
- Support troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical faults.
📋 Documentation & Reporting
- Record inspection findings, maintenance activities, and test results accurately.
- Maintain maintenance logs and technical documentation.
- Report equipment defects and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure documentation complies with project quality standards.
- Support preparation of maintenance and commissioning reports.
🛡️ Safety & Compliance
- Follow Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and electrical safety procedures.
- Ensure compliance with project quality, environmental, and safety requirements.
- Maintain tools, testing equipment, and instruments in good working condition.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with site standards.
- Promote a strong safety culture throughout all field activities.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
- Recognized Electrical Trade Certificate may be accepted for highly experienced candidates.
Experience
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in GIS installation, testing, commissioning, or maintenance.
- Proven hands-on experience working in high-voltage substations.
- Experience with GIS systems manufactured by Siemens Energy, Hitachi Energy, ABB, GE, or other major manufacturers is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in utility, transmission, industrial power, EPC, or substation projects.
Preferred Certifications
- GIS Manufacturer Training.
- SF₆ Gas Handling Certification.
- High Voltage Safety or Electrical Testing Certification.
- Authorized Electrical Person certification is an advantage.
Preferred Skills
- Strong practical knowledge of Gas-Insulated Switchgear systems.
- Understanding of SF₆ gas systems and safe handling procedures.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Knowledge of substation testing equipment and maintenance tools.
- Familiarity with PTW, LOTO, and high-voltage safety procedures.
- Good troubleshooting and fault diagnosis skills.
- Ability to work during shutdowns, shifts, and project outages.
- Good written and spoken English communication skills.

- Salary: Up to QAR 9,000 per month (full package)
