A leading global engineering and industrial technology organization is seeking an experienced Partial Discharge Engineer to join its Electrical Diagnostic Services team in Qatar. This is an exciting opportunity for high-voltage electrical professionals who specialize in Partial Discharge (PD) testing, condition monitoring, insulation diagnostics, and reliability assessment of critical electrical assets.
As a Partial Discharge Engineer, you will perform advanced online and offline diagnostic testing on high-voltage equipment, analyze insulation performance, interpret complex diagnostic data, and provide expert recommendations that enhance the safety, reliability, and operational efficiency of electrical infrastructure across utility, industrial, and energy sectors.
About This Role
The Partial Discharge Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and analyzing high-voltage diagnostic tests on substations, GIS, transformers, switchgear, generators, and power cables. Working closely with project managers, field engineers, and client representatives, you will deliver technical assessments, identify insulation defects, support predictive maintenance strategies, and contribute to asset reliability and lifecycle management.
Key Responsibilities
⚡ Partial Discharge Testing & Diagnostics
- Perform online and offline Partial Discharge (PD) testing on high-voltage electrical equipment.
- Conduct PD measurements on Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), transformers, switchgear, generators, power cables, and associated assets.
- Configure, operate, and maintain advanced PD testing and monitoring equipment.
- Execute diagnostic testing in accordance with approved procedures and international standards.
- Support commissioning, preventive maintenance, and condition-monitoring activities.
📊 Data Analysis & Condition Assessment
- Analyze Phase-Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) patterns to identify insulation defects.
- Interpret diagnostic signals including UHF, HFCT, TEV, acoustic, and other PD detection methods.
- Differentiate genuine Partial Discharge activity from background noise and electrical interference.
- Evaluate insulation condition and identify deterioration, voids, corona, surface discharge, loose connections, and other defects.
- Compare diagnostic results with historical data and industry benchmarks to assess equipment health.
📑 Technical Reporting & Engineering Recommendations
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports detailing test methodologies, findings, and recommendations.
- Develop maintenance strategies based on diagnostic results and equipment condition.
- Present technical findings to clients, engineering teams, and project stakeholders.
- Support root cause investigations related to insulation failures and equipment faults.
- Maintain accurate documentation of testing activities and diagnostic records.
🤝 Project Coordination & Client Support
- Coordinate testing activities with project managers, field technicians, and client engineering teams.
- Participate in technical meetings and project planning discussions.
- Provide technical guidance during commissioning and maintenance activities.
- Support successful execution of electrical diagnostic projects.
- Maintain effective communication with clients throughout project delivery.
🛡️ Safety, Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all testing activities comply with electrical safety procedures, risk assessments, and company policies.
- Follow applicable international standards, including IEC 60270 and other high-voltage diagnostic standards.
- Maintain calibration and proper handling of testing equipment.
- Promote best practices in electrical safety, quality assurance, and technical excellence.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the diagnostic services team.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, High Voltage Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Additional certification or specialized training in Partial Discharge Testing or High Voltage Testing is highly desirable.
Experience
- Minimum 8–10 years of hands-on experience in Partial Discharge testing and analysis.
- Proven experience with high-voltage substations, GIS, transformers, switchgear, generators, and power cables.
- Experience working on utility, industrial, power generation, transmission, or EPC projects.
- Practical experience using recognized Partial Discharge testing equipment and diagnostic software.
Preferred Skills
- Strong understanding of insulation systems and high-voltage diagnostic techniques.
- Expertise in interpreting PRPD patterns and insulation diagnostic signatures.
- Knowledge of IEC 60270 and other international high-voltage testing standards.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and technical reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently at substations and industrial sites.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Valid Qatar or GCC driving licence is an advantage.
